[It takes a while for Sans to respond, wondering exactly what it is Ratchet means and silently cursing the situation all the same. This isn't them. Sadness, talking through third parties, that's never how Sans wanted to be -- not with his best friend.]
what did you talk about...?
[He has an idea of what it could be (and he's wrong), but better to let Ratchet lay his cards on the table before incriminating himself.]
[And he's not about to now. C'mon, Ratchet. You know him better than that. Psh. Answering questions.
Especially not when this conversation took a turn he wasn't expecting.]
chara's medical file? wait, what was in there? is she okay?
[His mind is whirring with possibilities; he knows for a fact there's more than a little in there that would make Toriel very, very upset. Though, seeing as he's not currently on fire, it's more than likely something Sans is equally unaware of.]
how should I know, thats what I'm asking you! she was upset...she. patted me on the shoulder and told me not to worry it was...really confusing.
[How okay she was wasn't something Ratchet felt like he could answer. Although he's starting to see what made her and Sans such great friends, with deflecting skills like that.]
it was something from a long time ago. there was a lot on that chart. i'm sure you know some of it. [There's a sour expression accompanying that that Sans can't see.] but this was different. didnt fit with the others. poison.
[Sans puzzles on that one for a moment, ignoring Ratchet's indulgence in being a snot. He deserves that, and it's clearly the last thing either of them are worried about.
There's a legend every monster knows. The story of how the Undeground lost what they believed to be their final hope -- the death of the royal siblings. Prince Asriel and the human child the King and Queen adopted, dead in one night. One from a horrific illness, the other at the hands of humans.
If Sans had a stomach, it would have bottomed out as he recalled the story.]
[This is probably where Ratchet should back off, keep out of it. And normally he would...if it wasn't Sans, and if he wasn't getting frustrated with only have two thirds of the picture.]
i know it's none of my business but...give me something here sans. what am i missing?
[Normally, Sans would be of much the same mind. This was Toriel's story to tell, technically, but it was also one Sans himself knew since he was young. The rules of secrecy were looser when every Froggit and Migosp knew it by heart.]
look, a long time ago (like a LONG time ago), the royal family took a huge hit. the human they adopted, chara, died of a horrible illness and asriel followed through on the kid's last wish to see the flowers of their village. He absorbed his sibling's soul and passed through the barrier.
humans killed him. kid was only like, ten, but they thought he was responsible for killing the human he carried. and, well. you know how humans are.
point is, the way the story always gets told it's this... tragic series of events, right? kid gets this awful disease and everything else spirals out of control from there. if someone else did that to the kid, i mean. what mother wants to hear it was all preventable?
[As Sans recounts the story, he feels worry tighten around his spine. Whatever Toriel must be going through right now, it must be unimaginable. Whatever awkwardness lay between them was small potatoes compared to this -- they were friends first, always. Best friends. And Sans was gonna be damned if he wasn't there for her when she needed him.]
look, ratch, i gotta go. i'll call you later tonight.

it was about something i saw in chara's medical file. I wanted to ask her about it and she...well she didn't even know about it.
[There's a short pause before his next message.]
you didn't really answer my question.

[Some of the picture finally comes together. 'Chara' and 'murder' weren't exactly an uncommon combination, but this was different.]
