History: wiki

Personality:
POSITIVE

Adaptable
Sans goes with the flow... to a fault, yes, but rolling with the punches is key to remaining unshattered by the unpleasant realities of his life. Circumstances change daily, reality writes and unwrites himself, and through that process Sans has found a way to anchor himself with a few fixed points. These points are conceptual rather than tangible; things like friends and food and bad jokes. Depressions come and go, apathetic despair comes and goes, but knock knock jokes? They're always funny, no matter what's going on.

Observant
Sans is (well, was) a scientist. The role of passive observer is one he occupies easily, much more comfortable assessing a situation from a few yards back than by asking questions and inserting himself into things. That is not to say he won't do the latter -- he will, and does -- but he prefers to get a lay of the land first. He does so skillfully, picking up on nuances that may fly under the radar. After all... people can be more honest when they don't know you're looking, capiche?

Devoted
Of all Sans' traits, this is perhaps the most important and the most difficult to see at first glance. Lazy in his relationships, Sans can be detached and uninvolved in the hardships of his casual friends. But for the few who push past the barriers he erects, Sans is extremely dedicated. An inborn understanding that he cannot protect everyone from everything stays Sans' hand at times (even when it shouldn't), but he has the capacity to work very hard for those he loves. Whether they want him to or not...

NEGATIVE

Nihilistic
This could also read 'lazy' or 'inert,' but they are the symptoms rather than the disease. Sans was not always like this -- it is clear that there was once a time where he worked and fought and tried in a way he just can't anymore. Sans feels his impotence very acutely, he is convinced of his own inability to make any real impact on the progression of time or the forces that control it. He has his tricks, but he identifies them less as victory tactics and more as ways to buy time from the inevitable. This nihilistic view of the world isn't just isolated to high-stakes conflicts, it bleeds into all aspects of his life. From putting in effort at his job(s) to putting sheets on his bed, Sans can't see the purpose in trying to better his life or situation. He would much rather focus what limited energy he has into making the life of his brother better, chatting with a friend, and getting hammered at the local bar.

Judgmental
Whether he loves you or hates you, Sans will almost certainly judge you at one point or another. For those he hates, this can come in the form of cruel sarcasm and leading questions about the nature of their actions, resistant to see things from their perspective. For those he loves -- or even those he is neutral to -- the judgment is much more subtle. On many occasions (most notably in the canon point I am drawing him from), Sans will decide for others that they cannot handle certain truths. He tells himself he wants to protect them from a despair they wouldn't be able to handle as well as him, but the truth is less altruistic.

Emotionally Closed Off
... Which leads us to our final point. Sans is the skeletal equivalent of a brick wall. A funny, warm brick wall who's quick with a joke and an encouragement, but a brick wall all the same. Chiseling through it takes time and effort, something Sans certainly does not make any easier. It is completely possible to have a great friendship with Sans and know next to nothing about him; such is his power. His brother sums it up best.

Powers/Abilities:
‣ MAGIC
As a monster, Sans can wield that magic as a weapon (he's literally made of the stuff). He can manifest bones and fire them at adversaries in complex patterns, intensifying gravity on his opponent to force them to work harder to avoid those attacks. His magic functions the same as his brother in this regard, but that's where the similarities end. Unlike Papyrus' strength, Sans has comically poor stats -- 1 ATK 1 DEF. He also possesses only 1 HP, making him (in the game's words) the easiest enemy. Of course, this assessment winds up being an ironic one.

What Sans lacks in stats, he makes up for in sheer power. He is capable of launching incredibly complex attacks, hitting for one damage at a rate of 42 times a second -- damage that slowly ticks down until killing the victim. He possesses a unique ability to summon giant animal skulls that fire devastating beams of magical energy. His manipulation of gravity is also more intense -- Sans can float people in the air or slam them into walls with a flick of his hand by literally changing the way gravity and physics interact with them. How he harnessed these abilities remains a mystery, and he uses them incredibly sparingly, as expending the energy required exhausts him mentally and physically.

‣ TELEPORTATION
Because of Sans's scientific background and his knowledge of time mechanics, alternate realities, and quantum physics, he has developed many "powers" that go beyond using magic. The most dramatic of these abilities is teleportation, or "shortcuts" as Sans calls them. He is able to transport himself and others to new locations with seemingly little effort. Beats walking. (In a RP meta sense, this ability is easily nerfed by pure caution. Teleporting into places he has never been is a pretty stupid risk to take for a guy with 1HP... not that he would never, but y'know.)

‣ BEING A LAZY PIECE OF SHIT
As for non fantastical skills, Sans holds down upwards of four jobs (enough to pay the rent on a very large house for him and his brother without help) while still managing to accomplish very little work at all. He performs the bare minimum at each to not get fired, though still spends a lot of his time on the job. In the words of his brother Papyrus, Sans's skill in slacking off is simply unparalleled.

Regret:
Sans regrets making a certain promise to a friend and wishes to undo it.

Inventory:
‣ Blue hoodie
‣ Fuzzy slippers
‣ Basketball shorts
‣ A small key
‣ A incongruously fancy ink pen
‣ Paperwork pertaining to the deeply bureaucratic, deeply boring affairs of the kingdom
‣ A few ketchup packets
‣ A crudely fashioned ID designating him 'royal advisor'

Sample: Just the one, from a different game's TDM haha... I've been outta the RP game a while, but I'm decent I swear! 🙃
